Indian fintech startup Cred has secured $900 million in fresh funding at a valuation exceeding $4 billion, with Meta leading the investment round. While the deal strengthens Meta’s position as a minority investor in one of India’s fastest-growing fintech companies, it also marks a major leadership transition as Kunal Shah, Cred’s founder and chief executive, leaves the company to join WhatsApp.

The twin announcements highlight Meta’s growing interest in India’s digital financial ecosystem, where competition among payment platforms continues to intensify.

Meta leads Cred’s latest funding round

According to the company, the Cred funding round values the Bengaluru-based fintech startup at more than $4 billion. The company said the fresh capital will be used to accelerate growth, strengthen its organizational capabilities, and expand its presence across multiple financial services categories.

Despite becoming a minority investor, Meta clarified that it will not receive access to Cred’s customer data as part of the agreement, addressing potential privacy concerns surrounding the investment.

What is Cred?

Founded less than a decade ago by Kunal Shah, Cred has built its business around serving affluent and creditworthy consumers in India.

The platform rewards users for paying their credit card bills and managing personal finances through its app. According to the company, it now processes more than 40% of India’s credit card bill payments while also expanding into consumer lending and other financial services.

The Indian fintech startup has grown into one of the country’s most recognized financial technology brands, boasting over 170 million creditworthy users.

Why Meta is interested in Cred

Meta’s investment comes as WhatsApp Pay India continues to face stiff competition from established digital payment platforms in one of the world’s largest fintech markets.

Although WhatsApp has approximately 500 million users in India, its payments service has struggled to gain significant market share in the highly competitive digital payments ecosystem.

By investing in Cred and bringing Kunal Shah into its leadership ranks, Meta appears to be strengthening both its strategic presence and fintech expertise in India.

Kunal Shah joins WhatsApp leadership

Alongside the funding announcement, Cred confirmed that Kunal Shah will join Meta’s global leadership team at WhatsApp, succeeding Will Cathcart.

Announcing his decision on X, Shah said WhatsApp has significant untapped potential despite its enormous global reach.

“While it’s come very far, the delta between WhatsApp today and its full potential is massive.”

Shah’s move brings one of India’s best-known fintech entrepreneurs into Meta’s senior leadership at a time when the company is seeking to expand its financial services offerings.

Investors credit Shah for Cred’s growth

Investors praised Shah’s role in transforming Cred into one of India’s leading fintech platforms.

Shailendra Singh, Managing Director at PeakXV Partners, said the company had created an entirely new category, built millions of highly engaged users, and established a sustainable business model.

He added that much of Cred’s success could be attributed to Shah’s leadership and vision.

Profitability and IPO plans

Although startup intelligence platform Tracxn indicates that Cred has yet to achieve sustained profitability, Shah recently stated that the company has recorded its first profitable quarter.

Following Shah’s departure, Miten Sampat, who previously oversaw strategy and finance, will serve as interim CEO.

The company also announced that its board will begin forming a long-term leadership structure as it prepares for an eventual Cred IPO, marking the next phase in the fintech firm’s growth journey.
