COLOMBO — Zimbabwe stunned co-hosts Sri Lanka in the group stage of the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, chasing down a competitive target of 179 to secure a six-wicket victory at R Premadasa Stadium and top Group B. The result marks another major upset for the tournament, following Zimbabwe’s dramatic win over Australia last week.
Opener Brian Bennett led the charge with an unbeaten 63, while captain Sikandar Raza provided the firepower with a quick 45 off 26 balls, including four sixes. Zimbabwe reached 182-4 with three balls to spare, leaving the home crowd shell-shocked.
“This is a great feeling,” said Raza, who was named player of the match. “We are unbeaten so far, and it’s a fantastic position to be in as a captain. Tonight, we just enjoy the moment.”
Zimbabwe’s consistent performances in the group stage — winning three of four matches, with their game against Ireland washed out — ensured their qualification for the Super Eight, eliminating tournament favourites Australia in the process.
Sri Lanka, who had already secured a Super Eight spot with a win over Australia on Monday, opted to bat first. Pathum Nissanka anchored their innings with 62 runs, helping the hosts post 178-7.
Zimbabwe’s bowlers struck at crucial moments, with Blessing Muzarabani, Brad Evans, and Graeme Cremer each taking two wickets to contain Sri Lanka’s total. During the chase, Bennett and Tadiwanashe Marumani (34) put together a 69-run opening stand, setting a strong platform. Raza’s brisk innings then took the pressure off, leaving Bennett to score the winning runs with a drive to mid-off.
The victory sends a strong message to the tournament favourites: Zimbabwe, often overlooked on the global stage, are determined to continue their giant-killing run into the Super Eight stage
